Josiah’s Story
I had an interview with Voyage LA. I was able to tell a little bit more of my story. Get to learn a little more about me below.
Today we’d like to introduce you to Josiah Myers.
Hi Josiah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Born in Michigan, I grew up surrounded by art, music, and travel. My mother was a contemporary artist, and my dad was a minister and a musician. During the summer, my family traveled to Brownsville, Cuidad Victoria, and Matamoros for mission work. Being one of six kids, I liked being in my creative space where my imagination met storytelling.
Growing up listening to artists like Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Jimi Hendrix, BB King, Led Zeppelin, and James Taylor had a lasting impact on my diverse artistic expression.
During my time in high school, I discovered my love for photography, layout, and design while working with the yearbook staff. This led me to study graphic design at the Art Institute after graduation. Over the past decade, I have gained valuable experience working in the advertising industry, and my passion for photography has continued to grow.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Overall, my experience has been relatively smooth. There are always challenges that arise, but that’s just a part of working in this industry. It’s how you approach these challenges that matter the most. I see them as opportunities to learn and improve the quality of service I can provide. Nowadays, the market can be incredibly competitive, so it’s crucial to constantly find new ways to stand out from the crowd. I stay creative by starting passion projects that keep me challenged and engaged.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a graphic designer with a passion for photography. I have been working in the graphic design industry for over a decade. However, I started taking my photography skills more seriously in 2013. I specialize in combining my photographic eye with my background in graphic design. My unique approach results in cinematic stills and designing movie posters from those moments. I prefer working with action, dark, and drama genres as they inspire me the most. What makes me different from others is my ability to find a new perspective that no one else has thought of, thanks to my design background.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
What has worked for me over the years is networking. I have been riding a motorcycle since 2008, and in the beginning, I would attend as many motorcycle events as I could, using the opportunity to practice my photography skills. Through this, I have been able to meet like-minded creatives, some of whom I have formed strong relationships with. I find photobooks and old movies to be a great source of inspiration, and I try not to overwhelm myself by spending too much time watching YouTube or scrolling endlessly through Instagram.
